Hello everyone! LONG LONG TIME NO SEE!! Hope the army guys are doing well and the rest are surviving uni :))

The longggggggg awaited class gathering is finally here! (Okie maybe 2 months later or something hahaha) Need help from you guys so that we can have at least 90% attendance from the class okie! Kindly let me/shuhui know your schedule in May (esp the medicine and army ppl). We are probably gonna organise a bbq session but we welcome you to give us recommendations la! hahaha maybe we all can go universal studio/resort world together etc etc. You name it, we try to make it happen haha.

HELLO GUYS! This is like the first post of the year or something. hahaha. our class blog is super dead, don't even noe if anyone still visits it once in a while..

Anyway crap aside, here to inform you guys about MAF this year! Mr Ng wants the whole class to go back this year!! I OSO WAN TO SEE YOU ALL! SO PPL, PLEASE KEEP THAT DAY FREE!!

HEY!

ahaha, chocolate making on monday wad fun eh :D :D :D & delicious huh ! HAHA.

okay, so here's what we've learnt (well, i guess everyone agrees yeah)

1. How to make chocolate fondue
2. How to arrange the fruits around the choco fondue
3. Which fruits will go best with the chocolate

What we would like to see in the next GEMs (:
1. make real (solid) chocolate
2. Make sushi
3. more types of fruits

This chocolate making session was indeed a fuitful one, not only has it gave us the opportunity to learn how to make chocolate fondue, it also gave us the chance to work and have fun with our classmates ! :D

First off, thank you all so much for the dinner on Friday. It was really touching and warm for me, and I really didn’t expect all these. Thanks to Yibing and Evelyn especially, for planning the dinner and the scrapbook. (oh, Evelyn, you know I always thought you hated me!)

I still remember the first lesson. I walked in and immediately set everyone to do the experiment without even properly introducing myself. Neither did I do the ritualistic ice breaker thing where everyone stands up to introduce themselves. I actually felt that was pointless because I preferred to know each and everyone of you personally, but I guess I gave the impression that I was cold and proud. It’s regrettable that we started off on a bad note, mainly because that was the very very first lesson, and your class was the first I met. I didn’t know how to go about giving myself a better impression, and I guess things went downhill from then on. When I first saw your class, I could already feel that the class was really diverse, and the general air was unwelcoming. Maybe, many of you moaned silently that your chem teacher in JC had to be a relief. Of course, I was rather unhappy back in JC when I got a maths and a bio relief, so I don’t see any wrong with thinking that way.

I wanted to do things in an unconventional way, which I felt that I succeeded somewhat, but I was rather dejected when you guys were unreceptive to many of those ideas which other classes accepted, especially the Atomic Structure ones, which were actually thought up in my JC days. My friend had said that they were really interesting, so I dug those up to use them to teach you guys. My analogies didn’t work well too, maybe because of the distance between us. The frequency just couldn’t meet.

I admit I wanted to give up on the class once or twice, but I knew there are many of you with much potential. I wanted to give it a second chance, and also myself a chance too. But it was then on I decided to be less animated and present less analogies, as well as being much more serious in class. I guess this led to many lessons turning boring. Inexperience on my part, and this will be something I will regret. As I told you guys, I only could give around 60% of the kind of lesson that I wished I could conduct. Therefore, I feel I must apologise for this. If only I could be more independent of others’ impressions of me, and not let the feel of the class affect my lessons.

I rarely ever forced you guys to finish your tutorials, because I never liked teachers to breathe down necks for tutorials. Moreover I know many of you have commitments, and other matters to attend to, but it would come to make me a little disappointed when you guys turn up with tutorials undone many many times. Even then I insisted on my mindset, believing that one day my message to you guys will get across, that your tutorials, your education, is your own responsibility to create a stable foundation for your future. It also made me sigh when some always slept in class. Although once again, I never liked to wake people up, because I too fell asleep in lessons before. However, one thing I would like you guys to keep in mind is to have self discipline. Don’t look back and realize you wasted your youth. Rather, look back and admire the great stable structure you have constructed for yourself; no one else, but yourself.

Do you guys know, before I came back to teach, I watched the whole GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) anime series. I wanted, albeit childishly, to be like him in the show, inspiring his students, and also being personal with many of them. Which is why I acted like a boy sometimes and also talked to some of you individually on MSN. I wanted you guys to not feel a barrier between a teacher and you. Moreover I never liked to consider myself a teacher. I’m much more like a senior than a teacher, as those who talked to me would know. But of course, given the bad note that we started on, this became a feat. I realized I could not fulfil what I had set out to do, and occasionally I would have things that I would like to tell some of you individually, but could never find the chance to.

Leaving you guys just like that fills me with a sense of incompletion. However, I have to move on first, and this chapter in my life shall have to close. It was nevertheless fun, when I think back about teaching your class. Bittersweet, it was, but it was really consoling to me to have seen you guys improve so much since the first lecture test, to become one of the top classes in the cohort now. Of course, I daren’t claim that much credit for your phenomenal improvement, yet I bask in the glory of you guys. I will be gone next term, maybe just a memory for you guys as well, but, I hope what I wanted to convey to you guys stick. Continue to challenge yourself, and be a better person, every day, hour, minute, even the next moment. Live each day well, because before you know it, you would have grown up, and will be looking back at your JC days, as I am now, thinking of what I could have done better.

Remember guys, as long as you can motivate yourself well, there is no limit. Many of you have high potential just that you are not confident to tap into it. Stand tall, yet step firmly. Believe in the power of your self, and achieve what you used to think wasn’t possible. Yet in the process, remember to have fun.

P.S. It’s darn long because I didn’t have as much time to tell you guys stuff as I had with the other classes…=(

Today, we had our final (yay!) lecture on chem bonjing. As many of you raised eyebrows, scratched the head lice of your head, pulled your cheeks till you look like a bulldog in desperation at questions left unanswered during lecture, Shermy the Chemmy hereby presents you: Fun Stuff for Bonding! YAY!

Why do ionic compounds generally have higher MP than metals?
When an ionic compound is melted, enough electrostatic attractions have to be broken to allow small clumps of ions to slide past each other in a molten state. As electrostatic attractions generally require much energy to break, the MP of ionic compounds is usually high. In metals, the cations are held in a regular arrangement by virtue of electrostatic attractions between the mobile electrons and metals. When a metal melts however, electrostatic attractions are just weakened enough to allow the cations to gain enough kinetic energy to slide past one another, hence melting a metal needs relatively less energy and thus has lower MP than ionic compounds.

Why does silicon not form discrete molecules for silicon dioxide but carbon does in carbon dioxide?
Silicon is from the next period from carbon and oxygen, thus has one more quantum electron shell, which makes the atom larger. When carbon and oxygen react, the carbon forms a sigma bond with oxygen first. As the 2p orbitals of carbon and oxygen are around the same size and smaller than sulphur, the sigma bond is short enough to allow a side on overlap of another p orbital forming a pi bond. This allows formation of a discrete molecule. Silicon however, when it reacts with oxygen, it uses its 3p orbital. As the orbital is significantly larger than that of oxygen, the sigma bond is longer than that between carbon and oxygen. The bond length is too long to allow comfortable side on overlap of 3p and 2p orbitals. Moreoever, the different sizes of the 3p and 2p orbitals make formation of a pi bond more difficult. Thus Silicon prefers to form all sigma single bonds with oxygen in an extended structure. FYI carbon dioxide DOES form the giant covalent structure, called carbonia, but it is energetically unfavourable and forms back to normal gas form easily.

Then, why can sulphur form sulphur dioxide??
Sulphur forms 2 double bonds with 2 oxygen, but didn't we agree that 3p-2p overlap is difficult? It IS difficult but not impossible. For Si, it can easily hybridise 3s and 3p to form sp4 which makes it easy to form 4 sigma bonds of good overlap with oxygen. for sulphur, hybridisation is more complicated as it may need d orbitals, so using pi bonding is more favourable now.

So why does sulpur form 8-ring molecules but oxygen forms diatomic molecules?
When two period three atoms sigma bond, the bond length is longer than that for a period 3 and a period 2, meaning that an S-S bond is longer than an S-O bond. So after S-S bond is formed, side on overlap of 3p orbitals is even harder to achieve, so might as well save the trouble and use all sigma single bonds to maximise the overlap possible.

Then why is sulphur 8-ring? Why not 6-ring (like carbon is cyclohexane)?
Sulphur is large, so a 6-ring might pose serious space problems. 8-ring happens then, to be the first arrangement where the spacing of S atoms is far enough to not stress the bond and the bond angles. FYI sulphur does form S7 and S12! S7 is what makes sulphur yellow. So kewl.

But phosphorus is 4 member molecule! And it is a period 3 too!

This is actually white phosphorus, the least stable phosphorus. Because of the number of bonds phosphorus needs to form, this molecule can exist, but the angle strain due to the size of the atoms make this unstable and highly reactive. White phosphorus burns easily in air.Red phosphorus, the more stable matchstick form, is in a network arrangment, which means less strain on the bonds, and higher stability.

Why does carbon dioxide have higher melting point than chlorine gas?
I'm not sure about this. My guess is that carbon dioxide, although held by WEAK LONDON DISPERSION FORCES (not pd-pd. pd-pd needs a polar molecule. my old teacher taught me wrongly )= ), may be more polarisable than chlorine molecule since it is in a longer shape than chlorine, and maybe due to it's polar bonds too. MP(actually Sublimation point) of dry ice is -78*C chlorine is -101.5*C

How did Ming Han's oven break down? Haha, interesting turnout of events. It was not really a tiring day, the whole process just took a REALLY LONG TIME. It's really inefficient to use 1 single oven to bake everything at Yibing's :P Thanks Yi Bing for letting us use your oven and go over to yr house! (i think im speaking for those who went!) First time using the oven too, haha. I'll pay for my dinner later at school.

Anyway yesterday was damn fun. I think I was too hyper. Next time we can have many JTS sessions doing baking, haha. Because it'll be cheaper we can do it all the time. and watch Gao Chong dance on TV too!

hello.. i think we should treat today's incident as a lesson learnt. i heard from my senior that it is extremely common for bio tchrs to ask students to copy out lecture notes/tut. answer keys if they fail to complete their work. so yea.. mayb from now onwards..lets juz put bio tutorials as um.. top priority in our homework list..lol..and help each other out in completing the tutorials. hmmm..so um...peace among classmates...=X=X=X=X=X=X..
